Kindergarten-Grade 2. Everyone is looking for the missing Louella Mae. Men, women, and children all join in the search as they scour the cornfields, the barn, the woods, and the hillsides. The day passes, and when the dejected group returns home at nightfall, they find Louella Mae, a mama pig, sleeping in a tub with a litter of babies. This little escapade is engagingly written in verse, with the rhythm and rhyming scheme established in the first few pages. Thereafter, young audiences are prompted to supply the ending rhyme for each pair of couplets. The preschool set and kindergarteners love interactive poetry and are bound to ask for this book again and again. The simple text is also suitable for beginning readers. Litzinger combines watercolor and pencil for her cartoon illustrations. Ages 4-7. Savvy bookmaking turns this energetic barnyard romp into a fun guessing game. When a farm family notices that the mysterious Louella Mae is missing, everyone is instantly on the prowl: "Round up the horses! / Hitch up the team! / Hop in the buckboard / and look by the . . ." Read-alouders must turn the page to discover that the answer is "stream." This engaging pattern is repeated with the tree, the barn, the bear, the ditch, and the ridge. Litzinger's mixed-media illustrations have a good sense of color, texture, and movement. Although the primitive style may account for the fact that the characters don't always look the same, it doesn't explain their absence from some of the sequenced frames. The verse is occasionally forced ("Oh Mercy, I swan! / It looks like Louella Mae is really gone!"), yet listeners will appreciate the ending as plump, pink pig Louella Mae is found sleeping in the tub with her piglets. Louella Mae, made grandma a hit in twenty two states.

I am a grandmother of sixteen grandchildren,eight boys and eight girls ranging in age from newborn to ten years. I just completed a two month journey through twenty two states reading Louella May She Run Away to my grandchildren, their parents and to their young friends. From the East Coast, through the South, the Mid-West and across North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and home to California, this story was a huge success. I watched young and old alike fall into the rythum of this tale and cry out the rhyming words as the pages turned, hoping they had said the right word. They found the illustrations to be eye catching and in harmony with the search for Louella May. The story brought laughter and also a happy surprise at the ending. The story has it's own spacial place in our family and will join other favorites, such as Dr.Seuss books, The Bernstien Bears, Beatrix Potter's books or Charlotes Web and the Wizard of Oz.

Storytime fun!

I have read this book aloud numerous times at toddler and preschool storytimes and it has been a hit each time. The text lends itself well to a loud southern accent and expansive gestures plus there is a delightful "surprise" ending for the kids. It doesn't disappoint!
