Easily the best fantasy series I've read so far

As a voracious reader of fantasy, I've read just about every series out there. The Sword of Truth series, the Kingkiller Chronicles, the Codex Alera series, and The Stormlight Archive just to name a few. What usually bothers me is is just how straightforward the story arch can be. The good guy is miraculously good, discovers incredible powers, fights against bad guy (who is nothing but evil), and succeeds at the very last moment. Sometimes characters are intended to seem intelligent yet they succeed almost purely on luck. In some series the plot will be varied and fascinating, but the writing style will be so verbose you find yourself sloggin through pages and pages to get to the next big thing. Then the story becomes an excercise in waiting for something you know is going to happen.
Brent Weeks' writing style, however, is none of that.
To me the most interesting thing about Brent Weeks is not the twisting and turning of the plot. It's the careful attention he gives to the pacing. He'll cut away from a certain character, leaving you desperately wondering what happens next, but then move into something else completely fascinating and new. You'll forget for a moment how desperate you are to see the next big event. Instead the new perspective is always a perfect compliment, enhancing clarity and furthering the plot in ways that the main story arch could never provide. Even if you do get bored, it wont be for long. There's always something crucial to be seen or learned just a few pages away.
If you like complex world-building that's beautifully creative and easy to understand...
If you like a fast-paced storyline yet appreciate character development...
If you like to see evil and good and everything in between all mixed together...
If you like characters who act as intelligently or stupidly as their personality demands...
If you like social commentary through a diverse cast who each believe in their own principles...
If you like a plot that moves forward by more than the characters' need to not die or not let the bad guy win...
If you like a story that has no clear endgame...
If you like good writing that doesn't bog the story down by being overly styled or descriptive...
This is the series for you.

Ugh, is this YA and no one told me?

Other people have written extensively about the shortcomings of this book so I won't belabor the point. I didn't like the characters. I got through 60% of the book before I had to put it down because I couldn't stand the prattle between them that I think we are supposed to find engaging and amusing. There's something disjointed about a whiny teenager complaining through a war zone as if he's walking through the halls of this junior high. I just couldn't find his character believable.

So very good, despite my expectations.

So, I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to fantasy novels. I've been reading them(consuming them, really) for more than 22 years at this point, and I'm pretty quick to call out trash as trash. Long gone are my days of poorly written branded books about Drow, and if it isn't intelligently written with characters that make sense, I'm not particularly interested. To give you an idea of my tastes some of my favorites are the Otherland series, all the Farseer novels, and of course a Song of Ice and Fire. All that being said, I kind of looked at the Lightbringer books years ago, thought it looked like easy reading garbage, and wrote it off completely. Finally, in the last few months I was hard up enough for reading that I decided to read them anyway. I coudn't feel worse and more wrong about that initial assessment now. While they are all a bit on the faster reading side, they're written EXCELLENTLY, with a coherent, unique and original magic system that backs up a good story. I'm not going to get into the detail of the plotline, and to be honest I generally don't write reviews of books on here, but I wanted to write this on the chance someone else might see this who had been writing these books off or not giving them a chance- please do so, you'll be very happy you did.
(Disclaimer: I am putting this same review up on all of the Lightbringer books so far, as when I was trying to decide if I should give them a try I looked at reviews for each of them before buying the faster, and ultimately I'm attempting to sway someone who is basically my past self, here)
