Pronunciation at a minimum

I was surprised to see that there were few actual pronunciations made available, even in the early chapters, just a quick "a is pronounced uh" kind of guide and nothing past that to reinforce the learning. I would not recommend this book for someone who has not yet worked through some of the basic (or especially trickier) pronunciations of Gaelic words. The CD is helpful, but you'll be wishing you could ask them "Bruidhinn nas slaodaiche mas e ur toile!" as it chugs along with a steady stream of Gaelic and few stops. Instead, get this book after a very basic one, be sure to have an English to Gaelic dictionary handy.
That said, once you've got the hang of things, it is a very good guide for learning interactive conversation and is quite a thick book for the price.

Complete Gaelic w/2 CDs

Just started working through the book and CDs. The book is clear and detailed but so far easy to follow. I like the intro section on letters and sounds with the accompanying section on the 1st CD -- it helps with sounding out words on my own. The chapters are easy to follow even though the content is difficult (for me). The exercises in each chapter follow from the starting conversation and so far all the vocabulary has been clearly explained. Each chapter adds new levels of learning related to grammar and other features of the language. The CDs really help with knowing how to say the language. For each chapter the starting dialogue and a few exercises are included on the CDs -- the only change I would make would be to have even more of the content of the book on the CDs. I would not call this an easy course -- but it looks like if I apply myself to the material I will learn a great deal about Scottish Gaelic!

Excellent choice

I reviewed this book when commenting on the version in Kindle format. In that review, I commented that this book is one that can be heartily recommended, and I repeat that comment now. It is true that you could take a summer course or distance learning at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, and again I recommend that you do consider that option as well. If you are looking for a clean simple and comprehensive introduction to Gaelic, with nicely presented audio, then this book is for you.
