Review
"MacKinnon's Ethics is the perfect introductory text. It presents a balance of theory and application, and a balance of historical and contemporary readings. It provides a wealth of up-to-date empirical data on all of the topics discussed. And on top of that, it's written in a clear, engaging style."
"It is rare to find a text that provides an excellent combination of both ethical theory and applied ethics in a single volume that is concise, highly readable, and quite informative. MacKinnon's text is right on target!"

MacKinnon's Ethics
By Jeremy Trent
I just finished my college-level Ethics class; a course built around the chapters in this book. Upon reflection, I'd say this book largely accomplishes its goals of presenting multiple philosophical arguments surrounding important ethical issues in modern (and ancient) society through an objective lens. Each chapter begins with a real life example of the ethical dilemma that chapter focuses on, proceeds to introduce the ethical problem, then presents the arguments of different ethical schools of thought. Each chapter then ends with two essays written by ethicists, often presenting contrasting views on an issue, then ends with several theoretical situations centered on that chapter's ethical dilemma. This allows the class to discuss how they'd act in that situation, thereby stimulating ethical discussions. Can it be dry? Definitely. It's a philosophy book! But if you're genuinely interested in looking at ethical issues through the lens of philosophy and logic, this book is an excellent resource! Regarding the "bias" another review observed: my class, though often of varying opinions on ethical issues, never had the issue of bias or unfairness in the book come up. We appreciated the circumspection with which the author used when examining the complicated facets of ethical issues. If you need this book for a class, or are just interested in examining logical arguments about ethical issues, this is the book for you.

Good intro book with generally balanced presentation
By OWG
Good intro book with generally balanced presentation. However, there is bias evident to the careful reader. One example is the use of religious concepts to support some arguments but not others. For instance, capital punishment uses religion to argue against more strongly than for; abortion has little on religious arguments. This stands out as selective reasoning and detracts from the book.

So I gave it 4 stars because I think if you were looking for a good read on Ethics
By Jennis0212
Its a decent book. I wanted to give it 3 stars originally but that is probably only because it is not a book I would normally get. I got it for a class that I was taking. While I think that the topics were interesting, it wouldn't be a book I would read for leisure. So I gave it 4 stars because I think if you were looking for a good read on Ethics, this would be a good choice. It covers a wide variety of topics and real life situations. It does make you think about your perspective on a lot of things.
