About the Author

Anthony McElligott is professor of history at the University of Limerick, where he is also the Director of the Centre for Historical Research. He is a founding co-editor of Cultural and Social History: The Journal of the Social History Society. He has published widely on the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich, notably Contested City: Municipal Politics and the Rise of Nazism in Altona 1917-1937 (1998), The German Urban Experience 1900-1945, Modernity and Crisis (2001), and with Tim Kirk, 'Working Towards The Führer': Essays in Honour of Sir Ian Kershaw (2003). He is currently completing a major new study of the Weimar republic, Rethinking The Weimar Republic: Authority and Authoritarianism 1916-1936.

About the Author
Claudia B. Gilbertson was a high school instructor for 11 years and a community college instructor for 25 years. Currently retired from North Hennepin Community College, Claudia serves as a consultant for accounting online learning solutions. She is active in the National Business Education Association, North Central Business Education Association, and Minnesota Business Educators, Inc.

Mark W. Lehman, assistant professor emeritus of Accountancy at the Richard C. Adkerson School of Accountancy at Mississippi State University, teaches Accounting Information Systems and Forensic Accounting. A former auditor with PricewaterhouseCoopers, Dr. Lehman is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Fraud Examiner. Dr. Lehman writes journal articles and consults with accountants on the use of software in fraud detection. He was awarded Outstanding Educator by the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants in 2007.

"We should do what we don't know'

Mitchell Johnson continues to be one of the more erudite minds in contemporary art as well a being tremendously successful in both abstraction and representation painting. COLOR LESSONS is once again a highly sophisticated book/catalogue in a growing line of fine books about the art and mind of Mitchell Johnson. In this book filled with richly reproduced images of Johnson's work there is a conversation between the artist and Peter Campion, poet, writer and teacher at Stanford University - an interesting re-visit from a catalogue interview between these two articulate men from 2005. At that time Mitchell Johnson was not a household word or on the lips of fellow artists: now he is.

The 'why' of the increased visibility of the art of Mitchell Johnson is in part attributed to the multiple exhibitions of his art both in the USA and in Europe: it is in larger part due to the increasing sophistication of his art. Johnson has always moved comfortably between his signature abstract paintings - singularly beautiful and majestic blocks of color so sensitively juxtaposed that a quick glance is soon altered into a prolonged examination: there appear to be stories within the colors that seduce the viewer to explore - and his seemingly straightforward scenes of houses in landscapes, figures in groups, vistas of untainted land in Denmark, Tuscany, France, Cape Cod, and of course his own home in Northern California. He gathers palette ideas in every location that finds his visit and then creates from those new parcels of visual data even more complex works in studio, sometimes built as blocks of color that construct his representational or as simply color for color's sake that inform his abstract paintings.

In this exceptional catalogue the reader will be exposed to almost every thought plane the artist explores. But the images where he willingly shares the marriage between abstraction and representation - paintings such as 'Giant Truro', 2008-2011 and even more obviously in the stunning panorama 'Near Clecy', 2008-1011 - is yet another aspect of the humanity of Mitchell Johnson. No secrets or occult dichotomies here, but instead simple explanations of how he thinks and traverses the path between seemingly simple blocks of color and sharing places of houses and land and people he has noted.

In the well-transcribed interview Johnson contrasts Aristophanes ('Let each man exercise the art he knows') with fellow artist Paul Resika ('We have to keep trying to do what we don't know how to do'), and after taking the journey through this spectrum of art as beautifully presented in this catalogue, the path Johnson is taking is obvious! He simply grows more sophisticated in technique in a way that brings his audience deeper into the canvases he creates. Grady Harp, May 11

Mitchell Johnsons ,Color Lessons is a book every artist, collector, novice,could learn from.. from his instinct about color,to the definition of color. The ability he shows to go back and forth and the inbetween, representational work and abstraction with color theory being used as a vocuabulary...The unique application seems effortless, yet to study his work, you realize the depth of this artist. It is all there in every painting. His talent is immense. His knowledge is immense and the way he explains it in a relaxed manner, makes just more comfortable, and as relatable as his paintings. The more you look at this work the more you are able to discover. mark bowles

one of the best architectural guides

This is a splendid little architectural guide book, filled with valuable information, great photos and perceptive comments. It puts London's recent architectural achievements in context and is of value to both visitors and residents. I like the fact that the author is unafraid to express opinions, unlike most guide books that are anodyne and timid at the possibility of causing offense. The book covers an amazing amount of ground, with useful chapters on areas such as the Docklands, the emerging neighborhoods of places such as Hoxton. The amount of information on each building is good, with insights into why something looks the way it does. The story behind the Gherkin, for example is fascinating.

Ken Allinson knows all about the subject. The printed book may be good, but the Kindle version is terrible. The maps are unreadable and the photos are small and poorly organized. Need urgent improvements!

This research supports the Skinnerian paradigm, which asserts that "a majority of the descendants of Chinese immigrants in each generation merge with Thai society and become indistinguishable from the indigenous population to the extent that fourth-generation Chinese are practically non-existent." The validation of the Skinnerian paradigm rejects Chan and Tong's hypothesis, which claims that Skinner has "overemphasized the forces of assimilation" and that the Chinese in Thailand have not assimilated but retained their Chinese identity. To support Skinner's assertion and reject Chan and Tong's argument, this book presents rich empirical data collected via surveys conducted with the ethnic Chinese in Thailand from 2003-2004. This study uncovers that the forces of assimilation occur at two levels. On the first level, the Chinese in Thailand possess natural attributes which facilitate social and cultural integration and assimilation into Thai society. On the second level, government pro-assimilation policies, driven by the bilateral relations between Thailand and China and the political situation in both countries, are also responsible for the assimilation of the Chinese in Thailand. Frankly, this literary critic didn't expect Mick Foley's memoir of his life as Mankind (and his other wrestling personas, Cactus Jack and Dude Love) to hit No. 1 on Amazon.com's hardcover nonfiction bestseller list in its first literary bout. The cover is cluttered and confusing, and do we really need 500-plus pages of Foley's boasts? Yes. Foley gives his all for his calling, and he burns to tell his adventures. Take the famous tale of how he lost most of his ear (the bloody result is depicted in the 16-page color-photo section). It was in his 1994 bouts with Vader (Leon White): after getting a broken nose, a dislocated jaw, and 21 stitches in the first match, Foley did his "hangman" routine, wherein he catches his neck between the second and third ropes and spins them into a twist. "The end result is the illusion of a man being hanged by his neck while his body kicks and writhes in an attempt to get out... the man actually is hanging by his neck and the body really does kick and writhe in an attempt to get out." Unfortunately, in the prior match, Too Cold Scorpio had had the officials tighten the ropes, so Foley tore off his ear to avoid death by strangulation, like "a fox that chews off its paw to escape a trap." Foley also wrestles on 10,000-thumbtack mats with barbwire ropes and C-4 explosives, and earns the ultimate compliment: "The fans really like the way you bleed." When I was in engineering school in Asia, that summer, I had to travel back and forth is the most rickety bus.
One day on the way to school I found this guy reselling books on the street. None of what he sold were of any interest to me as I passed by but on something strange caught my eye, under an adult novel was a book with a picture of Mick Foley...This was the book. The was selling it for a few rupees....5 rupees to be precise. He had no idea what he was selling!
I bought it and it was my companion on those bus rides for the next few weeks.
So many good anecdotes....you will cry and laugh as you read through. What makes Mick such a great author is that his writing style makes it seem like he is your best buddy. It feels like he is talking to you directly. like each page is meant for you to find and read.

I have read several other autobiographical books before and since, none of them come close.

An entertaining easy-going insight into the world of professional wrestling

Mick Foley is one of the best ring performers in the past thirty years. I say that because I've been watching wrestling for the past thirty years (admittedly, starting at the ripe old age of four). As Cactus Jack, Mankind, and Dude Love, he created three of the most memorable wrestling personas I can think of.

When Mick first debuted in 1991 on World Championship Wrestling (WCW) as Cactus Jack, I was legitimately terrified of the man. His matches were full of brutality, acrobatics unexpected of a man his size, and enough overacting you believed the man had a screw loose. The actual Mick Foley is pretty much the opposite of eccentric characters. He's a dorky quirky guy who has a near-endless amount of funny stories to share about his fellow wrestlers. Have a Nice Day is the first of three autobiographies he's written and the largest at about seven hundred and fifty pages. It chronicles Mick's life from his Bloomington, Indiana childhood to his first retirement in 2000.

Due to the fact said retirement didn't "stick" and he was wrestling with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) as late as 2014, this autobiography is by no means complete but that doesn't mean it's not entertaining as hell. The heart of the book is Mick's easy-going narrative, which is seemingly one amusing anecdote after another. The book opens up with a horrific story about how Mick lost his ear in a match with fellow wrestler Big Van Vader, only to make the story darkly hilarious as he ended up having to explain to a German nurse how he got injured doing a "fake sport."

The book is littered with stories both funny as well as moving as we watch Mick Foley move from obscurity to becoming the sort of man who might win the World Championship Belt. Wrestling is scripted but it is a massive competition both behind the scenes and on the mat to distinguish yourself enough to win a push to the spotlight. Listening to the stories Mick has to share about both the WCW, ECW, and WWE's backstage politics will give you a new respect for anyone who manages to make it big. Wrestlers have to work their asses off in order to make any money in the business and frequently injure themselves in order to do the sort of crowd-pleasing moves necessary to make themselves famous.

There's moments of tenderness, too, like Mick Foley's tribute to Owen Hart and talk about his relationship with Brian Pillman (both men dying tragically at a very young age). We also get a moving account of his romance as well as sustained relationship with Colette Foley, a woman who is, in Mick's own words, far too good for him. Mick isn't a professional writer but this doesn't hurt him in the slightest as it goes well with his informal conversational tone. At the end of the book, I feel like I'd come to know the oddball professional wrestler and would likely have called him friend if we'd ever shared a workspace.

One of my favorite stories from the volume was Mick sharing how he first got inspired to enter professional wrestling by watching "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka climb to the top of a steel cage and jump down onto his opponent. It's a story with a funny twist at the end because he'd snuck away from college to go see the match against his parent's wishes, only for them to see him sitting in the third row on television (due to his very recognizable trademark flannel shirts). Another tale which I loved was Mick trying to deal with Vince McMahon's good-natured attempts to help his career by giving him truly horrendous gimmicks like "Mason the Mutilator" amongst other dumb stage names.

The book also contrasted and compared the benefits of wrestling in the WWE, the WCW, Japan, ECW, and the independent circuit. Mick Foley has worked in all four promotions and gone back to them after serving in others so we get his initial perspective as well as some after the fact. Mick talks about the fans of each promotion too and what they reacted to. I especially loved how he decided his "gimmick" for the ECW would be to be a guy who loved the WCW and hated hardcore wrestling. That's adorable. Less adorable being the description of how many injuries Mick Foley has sustained in pursuit of his craft.

Through Mick Foley, I got to know such individuals as Terry Funk, Diamond Dallas Page, Steve Austin, and Vince McMahon. We also get Mick Foley's opinion on some famous moments of wrestling history such as the folding of WCW and the infamous Montreal Screwjob. The truly impressive thing about this book is that I think non-wrestling fans would enjoy this book almost as much as wrestling ones.

And that's amazing.

A literary work that transcends its "niche appeal" and becomes a universal classic.

Simply put; this is the greatest book about wrestling ever written. If you love wrestling; read it. If you want to hear an inspiring and entertaining story of a man who traveled the world and lived his dreams: read it. If you have never watched wrestling and want to get an understanding of what makes it so special: read it. There is not one person from any wlak of life who cannot appreciate the humor and humility of Mick Foley and his first autobiography. I own two copies, the autographed one which sits untouched on the shelf, and the beat up copy i re-read once every year or so.

Strange and disturbing page turner

To the Waters Prevailed is a strange and disturbing tale that drew me in and kept me wanting to read more. The author's descriptions were so real that at times I felt like I was in the Mississippi backcountry. The brothers struggles were real and raw, and will haunt you until the very end.

From under a rock, out for an adventure this tale kept me hoping the characters would find good. Every event is totally believable only to sometimes wish they weren't. When I put this book down I looked forward to finding out what was next for the siblings.
