The tranquility of a small Colorado town was shattered on April 25, 1983, when two sisters, ages 9 and 14, were bludgeoned and stabbed to death while at home alone after school. Billy Keenan, a 13-year-old neighbor with a history of psychological problems, became the prime suspect after casually revealing that he knew the order in which the girls were murdered and after a detective found blood spattered on his jeans. In the ensuing investigation, Billy admitted to the crime while under hypnosis, and he was sentenced to two years, the maximum sentence allowed for a convict under 14. Billy spent the next three years in Colorado's Closed Adolescent Treatment Center (his initial sentence having been extended), but was released with no provisions made for therapy. His family had since moved from the Rocky Mountains to Southern California, where Billy joined them after his release. Adams, a former news director for a local Colorado radio station, has done a thorough reporting job on this case, which raises disturbing questions about the penal system's handling of serious crimes committed by children.

1980s Juvenile Justice

Eric J. Adams' LOSS OF INNOCENCE is a straightforwardly written and standardly formatted entry in the true crime genre. It tells the story of the murder by a 14-year-old boy of Kristy and Sherry Janson in 1983 in Bayfield, CO.
What makes the book a little different is it's fairly extensive discussion of the Colorado juvenile justice code of the time. The killer was 13 at the time. Had he been 14 he could have been charged under the adult code for the brutal and pointless murders.
The book contains some positives worth mentioning. First, while the writing is not noteworthy, it is also professionally reportorial and contains no irritating asides or other intrusions of the author's personality.
And most importantly Adams has managed to obtain a lot of information about the young murderer's life and his psychiatric assessments by individual doctors as well as well as, surprisingly and interestingly, extensive reports from a long-term juvenile prison/rehab facility where he was confined. This greatly elevates the quality and interest of the book.
There are also negatives. I have not mentioned the name of the young killer because, although Adams states that his name was published in the newspaper at the time of the crimes, he uses aliases for him and his family. While this may not be a big deal, I found it unnecessary and detracting from the veracity of the book. His actual name is easily available in the web.
I also found a few parts of the book, particularly almost the entirety of chapter 16, to be skimmable.
But over all, I found LOSS OF INNOCENCE an interesting and competently written book. I would not read it again, but at the same time I'm glad to have read it and can certainly recommend it to true crime readers

Heartbreaking

Loss of Innocence is positively one of the most heartbreaking TC books I have read. Kristy Janson age 13 and her little sister Sherry age 8 by all accounts were sweet, loving little girls who were adored by their parents. Growing up in the idyllic Bayfield Colorado, life was nice for the two sisters. That is until April 25th 1983 when their 13 year old neighbor decides he wants to kill them. Left alone until their parents return home from work the girls unwind before dinner. Unknowingly to them at first is that their neighbor has entered their home. It is apparent that both girls knew what was coming once they saw him and little Sherry the police believe, tried to run from the killer.
Because the killer is only 13 years old his name is not used however, a search on some web crime sites and you will find out his real name. Personally, I think if you are old enough to kill you are old enough to have your name and photo released to the public. The book tells about the brutal murder, the fight for justice, the parents road to recovery and of course the killer. His family had quite a few reasons to believe this boy needed help but refused to face facts and unfortunately two children had to suffer from their stupidity.

Sad Reality

This book is about my cousins, and is a true story that shattered our family. The spritual journey that my Aunt and Uncle went through as a result of this tragedy, has changed my life, and I'm sure will change the lives of all who read it.
God can bring good out of all things, even something as horrible as this. I Highly recommend that you read this book.
