About the Author
Danny Leiwy teaches at the London School of Economics and Political Science, on the University of London's International Programme and City University, London. He is a Senior Teaching Fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Danny is currently in practice as a Chartered Accountant. He was a Principal Lecturer in Accounting and Tax at the University of Westminster for 30 years, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Robert Perks formerly taught Accounting and Finance at the International Business School on the Isle of Man. Robert also held chairs at the following universities: Queen's University, Belfast, Middlesex University, Aberdeen University, Birkbeck College University of London and University of Westminster.

Far too many typos will make you spend extra time figuring out what's wrong

The book is well-structured and I think does a fairly good job explaining concepts of accounting.
Yet the problem is that in several places there are typos made in actual figures which gives you a different answer when you do an exercise. This can be pretty annoying and takes extra time. At least in 2 places the explanation was apparently copy-pasted from the previous edition because the diagrams they were explaining, were completely different.

I also wish they would include answers to all questions/exercises, not just self-assessment.

Book is great however, just have a couple of issues

Book is great however, just have a couple of issues:

1) I am using this book in conjunction with a course I am doing at university. In the university subject guide it refers to page numbers in the book. I cannot seem to get page numbers reading the book on my Mac which is very frustrating.

2) There doesn't seem to be any solutions to the end of chapter questions so I cannot check my answers nor seek a solution for guidance when I have no idea what the answer is.

Other than that, e-books are the greatest!

Good book for beginners

This is a basic book on personal finance and investments. Investment products covered include stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Before teaching about investing, the author makes readers aware that first they need to get control over their personal finances before opening an account with a brokerage firm. He discusses topics such as debt, budgeting, and saving.

When deciding to hire brokers or other professionals, readers can learn how to check these people out by looking at their credentials, experience, recommendations, and background check. This book should only be used as an introduction to investing. No one will become a great stock or bond investor by reading this book. For beginners, it is a good start.

Need a Little More

Mattive covers the basics of investing for the beginner, but the coverage is too minimal. Even the beginner requires more information than is provided in this new book.
One good point is that he attempts to teach the new investor about options, a topic that is too often omitted in such books. For additional help with conservative uses for options, I recommend The Short Book on Options.

About the Author
Carol Kochhar-Bryant is a professor of special education at the George Washington University. For 21 years she has developed and directed advanced graduate and doctoral leadership preparation programs related to secondary and transition services for youth with disabilities. She teaches courses in special education, legal issues and public policy, systemic change and leadership, and interdisciplinary planning and development. She currently consults with public school districts, state departments of education, and federal agencies, and has collaborated in international special education and transition policy research with the World Bank and the Office of Economic Cooperation and Development. She has conducted evaluations of state systemic reform initiatives, national technical assistance centers, transition services in correctional systems, and a variety of community-based agencies. Kochhar-Bryant is a former teacher of individuals with intellectual disabilities, a residential program director, case management program director, and evaluator. She is widely published in theareas of disability policy, leadership development, interagency service coordination, career-vocational programming, and secondary-to-postsecondary transition for special learners. She is past president of the Division on Career Development and Transition of the International Council for Exceptional Children.

Great Book for Strength Athletes

Steve Justa is not only a great lifter, but his aptly named book shows he can teach you exactly what he has done to become so strong. This book surprised me in it's realistic style, which makes you feel as if Steve is sitting with you at his kitchen table, telling you his secrets. Not only does this book show what he has done to become strong, but it outlines many different excercises and lifting routines to explore news areas of strength in your own lifting. If you are looking for a book that can give you new, creative ways to effectively increase you overall strength levels, you need to add this book to your collection.

Very Innovative!

For some time I have been one of those who, for some reason, believed that strength could only be built with barbells and dumbells in a nice, clean gym. This peculiar way of thinking was due to being under the spell of body-bulding and the fashionable scene that goes along with it nowadays.

Sure barbells and dumbells need to be a big part of a strength trainers "arsenal" but, thanks to writers like Brooks Kubik ("Dinosaur Training"), Matt Furey, and the author of this book, Steve Justa I have come to see that odd-objects (sanbags, barrels, even the human body) can be used to build super strength. These awkward shaped objects build muscles that remain unaffected by "normal" barbell training and, like some barbell exercises (squats, deadlifts, bench press), these types of lifts are compound exercises which emphasize that a great many muscles work together. This breaks with the body-building paradigm which emphasizes isolation.

Justa underscores saftey and gives methods he uses to train safely.

He also emphasizes the importance of building up the tendons and ligaments, a point entirely missing in most recent literature (thugh it was important among old-time strength builders).

Furthermore, you will get caught up in Justa's enthusiam for the iron game and the resultant greater motivation you enjoy from reading this book will lead to bigger gains. Good luck!

As far from mainstream as it gets, excellent, very worth reading

More a booklet than a book, but inspiring and well worth the read. Steve Justa is a modern descendant of the Old Time Strongmen, one of those outliers who has spent his life building amazing practical strength. Here he lays out some of the training systems he used to build that strength. Barrel lifting, isometrics, weighted running, shovel lifts, sled pulling, the Backlift, the Hand-and-Thigh lift, and more are covered, along with programs for more common gym lifts, including a training with singles program that might make McFitness club trainers blow a gasket.

Even if you're not interested in strength training, this booklet offers a fascinating look at what the human body can accomplish with time and dedicated practice. If you are interested in building strength, [U]Rock, Iron, Steel[/U] will likely change the way you train.

So, it's a very good book. Recommended.

Love this author

I love everything that Brenda Hampton writes, I was introduced to her by recommendations from Amazon based on other books that I had purchased previously. And I have been a fan of hers since that time and I have not been disappointed. Her books keep you on the edge of your seat. I have every intention of purchasing whatever she writes as she has yet to disappoint in her writing.

But as usual, some of the characters make me want to scream. I would not have allowed all the things going on in this marriage to have taken place from the onset, but never in my wildest imagination can I picture someone being bold enough to allow themselves to be degraded in their own home with their husband outside, that is straight craziness there. But it is so like Brenda though, which makes me love her writing style all the more.

Great book. I anxiously anticipate her next writing adventure.

Two wrongs don't make it right!

Brenda Hampton did a GREAT job with this novel "Two Wrongs Don't make a Right". I love Brenda's work but I was a little sick of the "Jaylin" character. I was happy to read about some new folks!
Issac and Cydney Conley are a married couple who's trust in each other is wearing thin, because of infedilities. Issac is a police officer who has a child across town that he thinks his wife does not know about, along with many other "jump offs". Meanwhile Cydney has been creeping with Isaac's partner Miguel. After Cydney escapes the drama and heads to Maui for a relaxing getaway,upon her return the ISH hits the fan!!! Drama all over the place! Can Cydney and Issac save there marriage and realize wrong + wrong = DEAD WRONG!!!

I had long awaited Brenda's next book and she does not dissappoint with her latest drama, Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right. Once again Brenda spins a tale of infidelity and triumph as she brings you in the lives of a married couple whose marriage is more than in trouble, it's in desperate need of CPR. You have the professional black businesswoman and a STL cop that is a master player. As what is true to life, men have a hard time when the shoe is suddenly on the other foot. The most amazing part is how detailed Brenda is with the male perspective when it comes to cheating. I swear it felt like she was in my head with some of the stunts that Issac pulled. This book is a definite page turner!

Great ethnography

Some of the reviewers of Katherine A. Dettwyler�s Dancing Skeletons are critical of her book because they sense that she devoted much of her study to analyzing her own thoughts, feelings, likes, and dislikes, rather than devoting her full attention to the culture itself. ...
The reviewers of Dettwyler�s book must have been disappointed with her study because they were expecting an objective ethnography, free from the exposure of the anthropologist�s weaknesses. However, in Dettwyler�s book, they encountered her weaknesses (such as when she unexpectedly cried after seeing a child with Down Syndrome) and accounts of her biases (especially toward Malian food). For a social scientist, such accounts deviate from the study at hand, making it more of a personal diary than an ethnography itself.
However, these reviewers seem to have forgotten that Katherine Dettwyler is approaching her field of study from the hermeneutic point of view. Unlike social scientists, who study their subjects objectively as a way to counter bias, hermeneuts use bias as an important tool to better comprehend a culture. Through the self-evaluation of one�s thoughts and feelings, and negotiation between informant and interviewer, the hermeneut is able to begin drawing a complete picture of the culture at hand.
Hence, through Dettwyler�s questioning and self-evaluation, the reader is able to see Mali through the eyes of a human being and not from a distanced scientist gathering raw data for his or her doctorate study. Through Dettwyler�s journey of trial and error, the reader begins to comprehend Mali each step at a time, the very same way Dettwyler does. Instead of being lectured at scientifically, the reader is taken on a trip through Malian society, both rural and urban, experiencing with Dettwyler the joys and tragedies of life in a rural village. Her thoughts and feelings provoke thoughts and feelings on the readers, making them, along with Dettwyler, active learners of Malian culture.

A vivid narration of children malnutrition in Mali.

Dancing Skeletons is perhaps one of the most interesting ethnographies I've come across. It's narrative style aid the reader in becoming more interested by the contents of the book. It's a charismatic narration; the reader gets a sense of the darker and lighter aspects of Malian society. It's weakness as an ethnography is the prevalence of an etic point of view. Even so, I highly recommend the book to those who are interested in the subject of malnutrition and growth problems in children.

A Different View

As I have taken several classes from Dr. Dettwyler at Texas A&M University, I have a bit of a different view on this ethnography. She is an extremly interesting woman, and her passion for her field is amazing. This shines through in Dancing Skeletons, and I feel that despite it's "scientific" value it is a great source for understanding a culture. This is what Anthropology is all about.
