Information is bang on!

The book is filled with great information and is a must have for expecting parents. I personally enjoyed the fact that the author provides examples throughout the book. Therefore, clarifying any questions I might of had. I'm an avid reader of personal finance books, mainly dividend growth investing, and was glad to see the books clear and concise writing. A lot of the time, terms are technical and specific to the industry, but this one on the other hand explains everything fairly clearly.

If you are planning on starting an RESP I suggest you read this book. Or at a minimum, read the author's website. It will ease any apprehension you may have about investing for your children's education.

PS... this book applies to Canadian residents!!

Top-notch resource!

Finally, this is one financial planning book with a great return on investment. We all know we need to save more to finance our kids' post secondary education. RESPs are a tricky little resource to understand, and it's worth spending the time to learn how they work. But not everyone gives a balanced perspective, and Holman does a great job. It's a quick read, and you can skip some of the chapters that don't apply to you. But worth the cost of admission; I bought the book last year, put the book aside and then this year read again the chapter on withdrawals -- and successfully got my first withdrawal this month.

This book is written in very clear and concise language easily understood by everyone from those who know very little about RESPs to those who have done their homework/research. I found it covered all the important RESP topics, used examples to enhance understanding and even provided some invaluable tips! The tips alone will save me 10 times the cost of the book never mind the peace of mind that comes from understanding this topic well and ensuring you take full advantage of the government grants available to your children. A very satisfying purchase with out a doubt!

I Am Simply Blown Away...

S.A. Hunt seemed to come out of nowhere, and then he blasted onto the scene with the first book in his Outlaw Series, and it was like a new master of in-depth, kick butt, deeply imaginative, epic fantasy had just appeared onto the scene. After the first book he kept up the excellence, and even surpassed his own superior quality. It is hard to believe, I know, but all of this is true. I swear, it is...

Now, with his new series, "Malus Domestica" which I am sure everyone has mentioned means the domestic apple tree, he takes on a subgenre and completely makes it his own. I'm talking about paranormal hunting. Heaven knows, there are enough books with young women on the covers dressed on in leather while clutching swords with words to the effect of "Demons beware because (insert name here) is really pissed off, just found about her powers, and is going to kill you dead."

This is not one of those books. It is So Much Better. Hunt has real talent as a writer and his powers of characterization are fully on display as he creates characters from five years old to fifteen hundred. The main character, as an example, is not your runway, beauty queen killer with a sword. Robin has a shaved head, except for her mohawk. She has a stud in her tongue. After her mother was killed by the local coven, so she was sent to a psychiatric institute, where they kept her medicated to the gills until she was eighteen. At that point they let her go, along with a few choice prescriptions for her visual and auditory hallucinations.

Waiting for her was Heinrich, an African American witch hunter who wanted to train her to hunt the witches that killed her mother. Unfortunately, they were too powerful, so she would have to work up to it.

The story opens with Robin sleeping in her van. She has just arrived back in her hometown. She has been killing witches for years and filming it. Editing the film judiciously, she uploads it to her Malus Domestica channel on YouTube. She has 4,000,000 viewers. They believe it is all fiction. They love her and the way she kicks butt.

Only she knows it's real. It is time to rescue her mother and deal with the witches that killed her, but nothing is ever straight forward in a story by Hunt, so the plot races ahead at high speed, the plotlines twister than a corkscrew. The action is virtually non-stop. He does a fantastic job of not only making you relate to the primary characters, but also the secondary characters are fully fleshed out as a supporting cast, both good and bad. This is a huge amount of characters to develop, and it is one of the reasons that the novel is so wonderful. Noelle and his bat dazzeler, Fish and his super hero motto, Wayne and his ring, Andrus and his puffy white shirt...I could just keep going. The witches were magnificent. You could understand why they did what they did, but it didn't make any less horrifying.

With this story you get action, adventure, violence, gun battles, horrifying deaths, illusions, transformation, demons, trans-dimensional doorways, cacodemons, technology, weapons, chases, folds in space, demon arms, paranormal pooches, cat zombie people, crazy witch hunting and so much more.

Hunt writes stories you will think about for a long time after you are done reading. They are so layered with emotion and meaning, I just cannot help myself. It has been four days since I finished the novel. I was so amped up when I finished from the wild climax scenes and the humorous epilogue, that I wanted a few days to compose my thoughts. They are as composed as they are going to get, I keep going back to the story.

So, my recommendation, if it is not already as clear as a window pane, is to buy all of Hunt's works immediately and make the incredible discovery of a little known author who should be George R.R. Martin.

Just buy them all now... I know how happy you will be.

You know those novels that become your best friends? Malus Domestica is one of them.

If you read a lot of books, you know that some are just different. Some are just a plot, they’re entertaining enough on an airplane, but the characters don’t change much, or really feel like real people. It’s like you’re watching a summer blockbuster movie. It’s fun and all, but you won’t be buying the DVD.

And some are different. They might be a bit harder to read. They might be longer. They might take a little while to get into. They might challenge the way you think. They might do all of these things or even none of them, but what they’re virtually guaranteed to do is transport you to another time and place, putting you in touch with people you couldn’t possibly meet but couldn’t possibly do without. These are the books you know you’re not going to read just once.

Malus Domestica is one of these.

It has a plot that, while it has traditional elements (good v evil and coming home to face your demons for starters) it’s not just another horror novel.

I would go so far as to suggest that it’s not really a horror novel at all, though it certainly has elements that might scare people or even just creep them right the hell out. I would suggest that it’s more of a cross between epic fantasy and urban fantasy. Epic urban fantasy, if you will.
Your protagonist is a young woman in contemporary America who deals with some seriously supernatural s*** while fighting her own inner demons. She throws some snark and kicks some ass while being legitimately vulnerable and not remotely mary-sue-ish. At the same time, though, it’s pretty clear that her tussle with her own personal villains is only a very small front in a very large war. When it ends, you know there is more to come on a million different fronts, both personal and not.

This book has women who aren’t just there to be rescued. It has people of color who aren’t just there to be people of color. It has disabled people who aren’t there just to be disabled people. It has gay people who aren’t there just to be gay people. These are real characters who feel like real people who just happen to be female or African American or disabled or gay. It’s part of who they are without defining who they are, just like real life.

“Just like real life” is pretty much a theme here. If the supernatural elements were real, this is a story that everyone could see happening in the town next door (because bad stuff doesn’t ever happen our town, of course.)

If you care about a great story that is going to creep you right the hell out, this book is for you.

If you care about great characters who are going to feel like old friends by the time you finish the book, this book is for you.

If you care about having books that have different kinds of people who aren’t portrayed as some mystical other, but just as normal people, this
book is for you.

If you care about having books that hint that there is so much more to the world than can really fit between two covers, this book is for you.

Beautifully Executed Dark Fantasy / Horror.

I was fortunate enough to given a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

This is an excellent example of the dark fantasy genre, with plenty of scares in there to appeal to true horror readers. The world-building is beautifully executed with interesting foes and not an info-dump in sight. The characters are thoroughly fleshed out and believable with motivations and histories that add to the carefully-paced plot. I couldn't put this book down and found myself being dragged deeper and deeper into this twisted world that just gets more interesting.

That all comes together to form an engaging, thrilling, dark, and twisted read that will drag in those who love Steven King and related authors.

I highly recommend this book and author, and I can't wait to see where Robin and co. go from here.

A fine update and excellent reference and learning guide.

This second edition of Master Cassandra over comes the major complaint of the first edition as being out of date. It covers the latest versions of Cassandra and then some. All the first edition chapters have been updated, and CQL get a good introduction in the 3rd chapter now. This is my 3rd book on Cassandra and I have to say it is now my favorite as it has tons of internals information. It is well written and made many complex concepts very understandable for me. Glad to have in in my Library.

One spot I disagree with the author though is on swap. In his experience he may prefer the database system go down from the OS's Out-of-Memory(OOM) kill from lack of swap space instead of having sluggish performance. Many places I have worked, every outage counted against your SLA and could lead to huge fines. Sluggish is not always consider down or count against your SLA and on the fly adjustments might be possible to get it back to acceptable levels. Other then that I enjoyed the book.

From my perspective is the most advanced, complete &up-to-date reference about Cassandra with advanced topics such as clustering, tuning, monitoring and hadoop integration.

I like the way the book is organized: clear information, good samples and still with very advanced topics the authors did a good job explaning complex topics. It is a must to have if you are entering the new distributed database world & NOSQL ..

Today, Elton would probably describe the audition to the Royal Academy of Music as a daunting proposition for any eleven-year-old to go through, but after showing what he was capable of when it came to playing the piano, an oral test, and convincing his auditioners that he had an ear for music, he was accepted into the Academy, and as far as he was concerned, he was now on the first rung of the ladder to becoming a professional musician.
Helen Piena, his piano tutor at the Academy, recalls that he was offered a Junior Exhibitionist Scholarship even though he couldn't read music, not even a note. He was chosen, says Piena, because he had such a good ear. She taught him the rudiments of playing the piano but not composition, 'I didn't teach him for composition. He had lessons with a composer for that, but I don't know how he was doing in his other classes at the time. I know his compositions were, and still are, classically based, and that was due to his education at the Academy; he learned a lot about music structure whilst he was there.'
As well as practising the piano, he was also in Harmony classes in Room 114. 'I came to the Royal Academy as a junior Saturday morning student in the early sixties,' recalls Skaila Kanga, a fellow student, and a then would-be principal harp player on Elton's second album. 'He used to always sit at the back, out of the way. We were keen and eager, sitting at the front and swotting, but Reg wasn't like that, he was shy and hid away in this very big room, by the window. He remembers me in that class but I don't have a huge amount of recollection of him because he was so very shy. It was quite a tussle for him. He had such a different way of listening to music, and was playing piano mostly by ear, which was, and still is, his incredible skill but which the Academy didn't really engender in those days. It was a much more classical training, and for those students who wanted to go down the classical path, it was invaluable.'
Certainly, he didn't seem to be comfortable doing Mozart and Haydn, continues Kanga. 'And so, therefore, the stricture and all the classes that we had were hard for him.' What he could do, however, was play and improvise on what he could remember, which is a phenomenal thing to do, and vital for the route into rock 'n' roll music.

Elton John must read

I couldn't put this book down. Mr. Hayward has painstakingly researched and interviewed those persons closely involved in the music publishing era of the 60's where a young Reg Dwight would sharpen his craft and begin his rise to super stardom. This book separates the gossip from the fact, and makes sense of a period of time that little is known about. Full of little known factoids, dates, persons and places. A book that needed to be written.

1960s Denmark Street comes alive in Hayward's book!

I want to heartily endorse Keith Hayward's book, "Tin Pan Alley." I'm nearly done reading it, and if you are not only an Elton John fan, but also a fan of music in general, this is a must read. Keith has not only encapsulated the start of Elton and Bernie, but even more has captured an era in music history that will never exist again. His work chronicling the music business scene on Denmark Street, particularly during the 1960s, and how Elton's rise to prominence was inextricably linked to that magical place and time is just astounding in its detail and description. Keith's interviews and research almost plunks you right in the street. You can smell the coffee at the cafes and hear the clamor inside the offices of the publishing companies. You can see the Kinks, Stones, Beatles and Reg Dwight and his companions going in and out of the buildings. You get what it was like to be a struggling group, such as Bluesology, and understand the machinations that led Reg/Elton and Bernie to the music they would start out writing and later the different style of songs they would end up recording. Caleb's insights are particularly noteworthy. Folks, this isn't a glorification book about Elton John. It's a frank, honest look at the state of music in England during one of its most creative and evolutionary periods. Whole chunks of pages go by without any mention of Elton or Bernie whatsoever, but that's as it should be. Hayward has a lot of history to impart, and doesn't flinch or take the easy way out. He put a lot of work into this book and it shows. I for one will never listen to "Bitter Fingers" the same again having read his book. "Those old diehards in Denmark Street start laughing at the keyboard player's hollow, haunted eyes." Wow, it takes on a whole new meaning now. If you haven't already, buy a copy of it today. I can hardly wait for his followup to be released!

Upclose and personal account of British music scene and EJ's role in it, though could benefit from some tighter editing

This book brings together new information from dozens of people involved in the British music business of the 1960's, all of whom, in one way or another, were involved in the rise of Elton John. The book ends in Summer 1970, when Elton came to the US for the first time, and had his breakthrough performance for the fans in... Philadelphia.
This book is about "Tin Pan Alley": it includes in depth introduction to the British music publishing business and its evolution into a recorded music production business. The focus is on Dick James Music. We learn how Reg Dwight found a role in that business.
This book is about "The Rise of Elton John": it gives the most extensive coverage of Reg's development as a musician, songwriter, performer, and recording artist ever published. A particular strength is the coverage of Reg's time with Bluesology; this section of the book is loaded with new details--Mick Inkpen provided a trove of memories and impressions.
Virtually every living person who worked with Elton (aside from Bernie Taupin and Nigel Olsson) from the early 60s through 1970 has input. The emphasis is on the music throughout--and it is fascinating to have all the various early musical efforts of Elton documented in one place.
The book would have benefited from a bit more editing; at times, the timeline is not exactly clear. But, this is a small quibble. A more extensive index, with a list of every song mentioned in the text, is needed--this is a serious omission for a book that, in every way, gives wonderful insight into the early career of Elton John.
Keith Hayward's session at the 2013 Elton Expo in Las Vegas was an absolute highlight of the event. Hayward is a passionate music fan, a dogged researcher and has a distinctive "voice" in his prose.
A "must read" for anyone interested in Elton John and particularly those years leading up to his breakthrough success in 1970.

An Enjoyable Read!

I admit it. I find French women fascinating. What's funny is that I don't even know any. Oh, but I've heard about them, and read about them, and tried desperately to try and learn to tie a scarf with panache. So when I stumbled upon, What French Women Know: About Love, Sex, and Other Matters of the Heart and Mind by Debra Ollivier, I didn't even think twice before adding it to my cart.

I've read lot's of books about French women, from what they wear to what they eat. This book was different. It delved more into why they are what they are. More than that, it helped me see why, as an American, I am what I am.

Like most other American girls, I grew up wanting to be like everyone else. Wanting to fit in, wanting to be liked. French women don't want to be like everyone else, they want to stand out, they want to add their individual touches. And as far as being liked....they don't care. They don't feel the need to be nice, to go around smiling at everyone.

Another interesting area was in child rearing. They are much more inclined to try and raise independent children. The author talks of the day care that her two year old attended. The daycare was taking the two year olds off on a two day field trip! The French parents all let their children go and enjoyed a lovely two days relaxing with their husbands, while none of the American women would let their children go.

All in all, I enjoyed this book. Do I think that French women are better than me? No. Do I think I am better than French women? No. Do I think that perhaps we could learn from each other? Yes?

It is Attitude Mon Cherie!

It is always interesting to read how different cultures perceive life. According to author Ollivier, French women celebrate individual beauty, know how to handle the differences between men and women, embrace their own rules, don't mind a lack of perfection and enhance their femininity.

Ollivier shares how French women use these skills to their advantage. Clearly in many ways many French women have learned to live a life of enjoyment and acceptance instead of striving for a non attainable perfection and focusing on the negative.

In her book Ollivier points out the ways a French woman might perceive something vs. how an American woman might. This is not to say a French woman's way is better, it is just different.

For example, if a daughter bought her boyfriend home for the first time an American might give him the third degree immediately while the French would be loathe to ask personal questions. Which way is right depends on your thinking.

But what is so interesting is how it boils down to our approach to things and attitude. If you are unhappy with how things are for you now or want a little attitude change checking out the book may give you fresh ideas on how to approach things. Then again if all is working for you, no need for a book to learn about "What French Women Know" unless you want to know what they know just so you know :)

How French Women Seem When You're from LA

First off, be aware that the author is from Southern California and was apparently raised with so little culinary knowledge that she was impressed to find that a pie crust can be made from graham crackers and butter and that a man does not have to have gone to culinary school in order to know how to devein a duck liver. She was also raised in an atmosphere in which girls are raised to live in order to spend most of their social time in the company of other women, frantically trying to gain the approval of other women. No wonder France bowled her over.

If you are a woman who actually prefers the company of men, women who like men and flirting with men, and women who are nevertheless perfectly happy not being men, then you already know nearly half of what it took for French women to impress the author. The other half is fun to read, but be warned that the author commits the common Southern Californian sin of throwing her whole allegiance unquestioningly behind her current fad in intellectual thinking.

In other words, this is not a deeply thought-out work of comparing and contrasting French and American attitudes. It is a book about why the French amazed and charmed a Californian enough that she has become a French citizen. Even if you're not ready to drink the Kool-Aid--or should it be Orangina?--you might enjoy the safari.

Be warned: the audiobook is read by the author, not a professional voice actor. Be prepared to enjoy/suffer accordingly.

This is a great how-to book

If you are even thinking about starting into business for yourself in the computer world, this book is a must! Matt will walk you through the critical thought process of determining if this is the career, and life, really, path for you. Once you make that decision, he'll take you through the important steps in building your business, in a way that is logical and understandable - peppered with facts, guidelines, hints and tips, and real life examples; from his own experiences and the experiences of other experts in the field. If you are seeking success, this book will be a real building block in creating your business!

The problem with most, if not all the books on starting a computer business, is that they don't talk about social media sites, or especially National IT Service Providers which can be a great way to make money because the work comes to you, and other current, relevant aspects of both marketing and the computer industry; they are written on paper, and that makes them outdated fast, needless to say.

The Marketing industry really is moving as fast as the computer industry and older books on the subject simply are not fresh. This alone proves why print on paper simply does not work for topics like starting a computer business for the two aforementioned reasons, marketing and the computer business.

So having an e-book means the author has the ability to update when technology/marketing and the like go through changes. I'll take this book over all the others in part for that reason, and others. Additionally, I enjoyed the colorful elements in the book which keep the interest level up throughout.

One of the seemingly simplest and brilliant things I read was the tip about how after you have completed the work on a service call, simply bookmark your web site on the customer's computer and put a shortcut on their desktop before leaving their site. And I would like to add, there is no need to ask the customer, just do it. They are not going to mind that if the Tech provided great service. That's better than a business card they may not remember where they left, a magnetic logo on their fridge they forgot about, or a coffee cup they don't like the color of or broke a while back, not to mention the costs of these items vs a free shortcut. Okay, yeah, so if their computer doesn't boot, the shortcut would be useless but that is rare overall and when it happens, they will remember your company name from the link and can look you up from that memory, or as an emergency, they can probably eventually figure out where they put your business card. But the link is the best! You could tell the customer that it is their 911 hotline to you and even they keep the icon and call you from your web site, you will place them at a high priority or offer a small discount. So that was another great idea I would bet not every computer tech knows and uses.

As a fellow technical eBook author, I follow all the other writer and educators in my industry because the learning just never stops! Matthew's advice, checklists and past experience with working in the computer industry is all outlined well in this eBook. If you are just starting out, or a successful business owner, there are plenty of things you will learn from Matthew here. I've owned my business for 7 years and had many "aha!" moments, great read, good price, I highly recommend!
