Required Reading

This book analyzes the central role the metaphors play in human thought. Metaphors reveal and highlight certain
aspects as well as hide other aspects. As scientists we use theoretical models to understand the real world constantly. The
fact these models are metaphors is crucial to understanding many debates about the realism and lack thereof of scientific theories. I am surprised that the set of ideas contained in this book is so little known and discussed in academic circles. I
have not read them, but more recent books like Lakoff's Metaphors We Live By probably cover the same ground.

They also include a few funny cartoons but more importantly they have those highlighted main points for each step and then explain the step right after that. They also include the tips with the usual For Dummies bulls eye and arrow to highlight each tip.

You also get the grayed sections of other useful and helpful information that did not really fit into the chapters and paragraphs but still helpful information. They have included plenty of helpful information and advice from how to shop for a bike to how a bike shop runs their business by helping you to buy parts and bikes.

Bike Repair & Maintenance For Dummies is a great step by step manual with all that extra content to not only help you with your bike but with many decisions in biking like purchasing new parts or even a new bike. Bike Repair & Maintenance For Dummies is well worth the cost and one of those must have books for anyone who wants to save money by doing even the simple stuff on your bike.

One thing I like with the For Dummies book is the step by step guides that have the necessary parts highlighted for easy repair and adjustment while you're actually doing it. When the book is lying open on the toolbox and you have a wrench in hand trying to figure out what to do next its right there in bold.

This book has such an excellent insight into how to repair and maintain your bike like a professional. Each step or problem that a rider may face is carefully instructed for you so that you have all the steps necessary to do an excellent job! I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn new skills about keeping your bike in shape and also those who just want to learn more about the mechanics of bikes! Overall great book!!

Not Quite What the Title Suggests

I bought this book because I wanted to learn about how to keep my bike working well. I take it in to the professionals when something actually breaks or wears out or otherwise needs serious fixing, but I wanted to learn about my bike's everyday needs and workings. Sadly, this book turns out not to be what I wanted, as it focuses almost entirely on the "Repair" mentioned in the title and very little on "Maintenance."

Instructors, please don't use this as a course book

I am currently the marker for a first course on linear programming which uses this book. I find that the definitions of key terms are buried in the text, like the definition of a basic solution on p. 95. The description of the simplex algorithm in section 2.1 is mixed together with a particular linear programming problem. I would prefer to have a general description and then many detailed examples, rather than a mix of both and then only two examples. I have a similar complaint with section 2.3 on the two phase method.

This book is expensive. There are books published by Dover that cover the simplex algorithm, duality, and integer programming that cost a tenth as much as this book, and an instructor should look at those before assigning a book that costs this much. Also, it is ludicrous now to have newly purchased books come with floppy disks.

A good book

This is a good book. Everything is well explained and each section has many examples. The only thing I would complain about is that the examples should probably have been placed before the theorem statement/proof as it would help the reader understand the proof. The material is all very straightforward and shouldn't cause any headaches. Overall an excellent book which I'd recommend to anyone who would like to learn linear programming.

For anyone trying to learn linear programming out a class room setting it is also good as the back has answers to odd numbered questions.

A Realistic Look at Life

I docked one star because I think the book was released too early in Ailan's life. Not only from the point of view that he has to grow up in a tough world with his story in the public domain, but after what Alex seemed to have morphed into,it would have been interesting to see how Ailan fared at a similar age. Sequel perhaps?

My 10-year-old 5th grader, reading at about a 7th-grade level now, *still* loves these books, even though they are more for a 2nd-grade reading and comprehension level. She still finds the stories extremely sweet, little harmless fantasies about how problems can get solved, and puppies' cuteness can be truly appreciated. Reads each one in about 20 minutes now.... We must have at least twenty of these books. I appreciate that it gives her something to read that is not plunging her into material unnecessarily "mature" for her (like Twilight, for example), just because she has a high reading level.
