Not as described..

The synopsis for this graphic novel is completely wrong. The actual heroine and hero aren't Whitney and Sloane, they're Kris and Jared. And of course, it's a different story. I purchased this because I got curious after reading the description so I'm a bit disappointed and am left wondering what the title of that novel really is. I've decided to keep this purchase though because it turned out to be another good story. Anyway, I hope they change the description of this title pronto. Most readers aren't as forgiving as I am.

Insightful non-fiction read about the making of a man

I would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to Xan Hood and his publisher for sending me a copy of "Sweat, Blood & Tears" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a reviewer copy available to me.

When I requested a reviewer copy of "Sweat, Blood and Tears: What God Uses To Make A Man" by Xan Hood, I hoped to discover the secret key to understanding my husband. I want to know what makes my man tick...what motivates him...what encourages him...because, on my own, I do such a terrific job of bringing him down.

What I found in the pages of this book were one-word chapter titles that intrigued me and prompted me to read the book out of order. I found bold and frank writing about what makes a man - from God to life experience. I found pools of wisdom and insight, offerings of logic for understanding my man. This book provoked my thinking and entertained me immensely.

This book makes me want to encourage the wildness in my husband rather than the tame, socially acceptable - and wholly unnatural - idea of manhood. But how will I do that? I'll get my husband to read the book and tell me what he thinks. I'll ask him how I can encourage him to be everything he can be. Sounds like an interesting date night.

Wisdom and Humility Beyond His Years

I didn't get a review copy in the mail, but I pre-ordered the book. The title intrigued me and I read tons of men's ministry books, reviewing them for an Episcopal organization.

Among the books I've read though, none has made me as determined to put it in the hands of the men around me as this one. I am as grateful to John Eldredge and Robert Bly as Xan is. But there is in Xan's journey something that touches even deeper hungers.

What appeals most to me is that the author sees beyond the wilderness to its purpose in us. He isn't a fan of wilderness for it's own sake, but for what it teaches. He isn't a fan of male companionship in itself, but for the need that it, and it alone, can satisfy.

Xan Hood's humility throughout the book is totally disarming and inviting. No man reading it need be put off by the way way he finds himself there. At the same time, very little of a modern man's struggle is left unrevealed, and so it will challenge the reader on many, many levels.

I am glad that my son's generation will have someone as wise as Xan Hood to help lead them into manhood in this brave new world.

Not for me.

Interesting topic. Only 4 and 5 star reviews. But I just didn't get it. Read the first few chapters and thought, okay, maybe the author is just providing the setting. A third of the way through, I was still waiting for something significant, some substance. The revelations seemed, well, uninsightful, even contrived. But perhaps I am not the intended audience. Maybe I'm not manly enough (I'm a mid-forties male with a teenage son). I can live my whole life without initiating a discussion on masculinity. There are many paths to maturity (a more important quality to me) which do not require a rifle. Hard work is not a mystery to me.

I still wanted to like this book and give it a chance, so I tried some random chapters, hoping to find something worthwhile. In all, I read about fifty percent of the book before giving up. Perhaps the other half of the book is the "good stuff." I may eventually get around to it, but from what I've read, I'm not recommending it to my son, yet. Or maybe he is the intended audience and will find some wisdom in its pages.

if you own no other climbing book, own this one

This book has managed to condense all the fundamentals of (outdoor) climbing - from rock to ice- and to present them in an easily understandable and concise format. I found it invaluable as a beginner and have continued using it as a reference book. If you take climbing seriously, you will probably buy some other books on more specialized techniques down the line, but this book is where you should start. Nothing essential is missing. The book is also very good at pointing out all the ways you could possibly make mistakes, so you don't make them.

FYI, this book does not go so much into training for climbing as it does the skills and knowledge you will need to climb. (For rock climbing, the best book on *training* I've found is "Performance Rock Climbing".) It also does not go too much into first aid, but the publisher of this book also puts out a book on wilderness medicine if you are interested...

Here in Seattle -- where mountaineering is almost a religion -- Freedom of the Hills is to climbing skills what Fred Beckey's Cascade Alpine Guide is to climbing routes: the bible. It's the fundamental textbook for the Seattle Mountaineers' climbing curriculum, reputed to be the most thorough and rigorous in the Pacific Northwest and perhaps in the country. Virtually every sentence in Freedom of the Hills has a piece of information that has helped me in the mountains. I've re-read portions so many times that my 1979 copy is more tattered than your grandmother's New Testament. Since I first read Freedom of the Hills I've climbed dozens of peaks in Washington's Cascades and Olympics -- on steep snow, ice, technical rock, and glaciers, you name it. I've been through the Ptarmigan Traverse, up eight peaks in the Pickets, and atop Rainier three times. To put it bluntly, if I'd attempted these climbs without the knowledge and skills in this book, by now I would certainly be dead. So, before you go up there: Take a class. Read this book. Stay alive. . . . Okay, I gotta go. I'm buying four more copies of this book right now to send to friends in Colorado.

I have a huge, thick copy right here and it is the bomb. Want to know somethin' about the mountain experience? Everything is here in the book. Every serious and safe climber has read from it. Read it, you'll see why it's the best source to turn to. Even Alex Lowe calls it "an essential...remarkable compilation." Yeah Baby! :) Read & Climb On!

It is simply wonderous for pastors to use in their sermons, it is excellent source for giving illustrations. DL Moody was one of greatest revival mover in America Religious history. It is more fitting that pastors use the treasury of a great evangelist. It shall aid you in your sermon greatly. I used it in my sermons and the audience enjoyed the illustrations greatly. It is a must for pastors, buy one for your pastors!!

This mantra is really powerful! I tried chanting Goddess K-Ma mantra in bed and it gave me so much energy that I did not have a wink of sleep at all, lol.
And I tried the other mantra for the whole day until I came home from work and was so tired and I felt a presence! She visited me and gave me energy! All I can say is awesome!

With mantra and devotion one worship her do prayers in this age she is the only most powerful shakti energy in this whole universe out side she looks more ferocious but from her heart this great mother is the most loving and giving boons to her children
The whole creation is by her and at the time of end everything merge in to her her creative energy and her destroying energy is amazing all powerful
I have been doing her mantra since I was 7 years old her mantra is very sweet very powerful most energetic then any other and there is always grace peace and joy emerging from repeating her great mantra
