Nonviolent rebellion has a long history, but since the industrial revolution the use of organised civil disobedience has become increasingly widespread and refined. With the advent of the internet, civil rebellion itself has been totally revolutionised. The rules of the game have truly changed and control of "the truth" has, to some extent, finally been democratised. These days, the big beasts on the political landscape are no longer labour unions fighting a local cause, but global movements, representing hundreds of millions of activists across a borderless world. And their armoury is formidable. Even the smallest local protest group has been immensely empowered by recent technological change. Here we present a practical guide to civil rebellion, defining more than 300 separate ways in which citizens may effectively deliver a protest to an authority and the public, either alone or in a group. In comparison with the ballot box, civil disobedience seems a rough way of dealing with authority. But in the absence of a functioning democracy, it is rapidly becoming the last resort of the citizen to defend their freedom from an increasingly reviled, dysfunctional and autocratic political establishment. This book is a practical guide. It is designed to help in the routine planning and organisation of peaceful protest. But the book also includes a history of civil rebellion and a moral and legal discussion of how civil disobedience may be used to achieve political objectives. Identical in structure; an excellent and much needed supplement to the original

Being a writing enthusiast, I purchased the original Elements of Style nearly 5 years ago. I never made it past the first 5 pages. It literally bored me to sleep every time I tried reading it. Needless to say, I gave up on optimizing my sentence structure and grammar and Strunk & White's work has sat on my bookshelf collecting dust for the last 5 years.

Then I saw this book at the local bookstore, read the first 5 pages, bought it, and finished it that day. Absolutely hilarious; both intensely clever and witty while still providing the much needed knowledge in an easy to digest format. Then I figured since I had both versions, why not have some fun and do a little comparing to see how much Baker and Hansen snipped out from the original? After all, this version was much thinner. So I went through and compared the topics of each book side by side. Lo and behold, Baker & Hansen stayed true to Strunk & White's version on EVERY POINT. They simply reworded each topic's explanation to a wittier version which usually included drugs, sex and lots of cursing. The things they omitted were issues that I realized weren't as applicable to modern day language anymore. Yet the fundamental rules they discussed remained unchanged.

Now here's where things get really interesting:

In the side by side comparison of both books, I found myself reading through and highlighting Strunk & White's original. In the course of an hour, I had literally read & highlighted Strunk & White's book cover to cover. A book that had been sitting on my shelf for 5 years because I couldn't bring myself to get through 5 pages was suddenly devoured and fully understood in an hour.

So here's my two cents: The humor of this book is awesome. However, the true value of this book lies in its ability to teach Strunk & White's book effortlessly. Anyone who wants to become a better writer but just can't seem to get into Strunk & White's book needs to go out and buy this book immediately. HIGHLY recommended.

Holy awesome!

I'd bet the house that this is the funniest and easiest book on grammar in print. It is VERY raunchy; most of the examples refer to either graphic sex or drug use. But, it is an awesome read for someone that writes for a living and wants to spruce up their style and grammar while also experiencing some degree of enjoyment.

Think "Jackass" meets grammar and you'll get the picture. I simply can't find anything wrong with it.

I studied journalism in college so I'm a bit of a grammar nerd (yes, I'm one of those people who will only text in complete sentences.) 4 years post college, I bought this book on a whim and was pleasantly surprised with how great it is.

Not only does it cover the very basics such as active vs passive voice, agreement between nouns and verbs, and paragraph construction, but it also has more advanced topics like when to use a dash vs a semicolon.

It's also pretty damn hilarious.

Highly recommended for any high school and college student who needs a little help in the grammar department or any one who just wants an amusing book to improve their writing.

About the Author
Jeannette D. Hoit, PhD, CCC-SLP is a Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at the University of Arizona and a speech-language pathologist. Dr. Hoit received her BA in Anthropology from University of California at Los Angeles, her MA in Communicative Disorders from San Diego State University, her PhD in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of Arizona, and pursued postdoctoral study in the Harvard School of Public Health Respiratory Biology Program and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Speech Research Laboratory. Dr. Hoit’'s research focuses on speech physiology, with an emphasis on normal aging and development, neuromotor speech disorders, and respiratory function and dysfunction. Dr. Hoit is a past-Editor of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and past-President of the American Association of Phonetic Sciences. She has received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from San Diego State University and several teaching and mentoring awards from the University of Arizona.

Gary Weismer, PhD, is Chair and Oros-Bascom Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the Pennsylvania State University, and his doctorate from UW-Madison in 1975. Dr. Weismer'’s research publications concern normal speech production, and speech production and intelligibility phenomena in persons with motor speech disorders. Dr. Weismer has twice been Associate Editor for the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research (previously the Journal of Speech and Hearing Research), was Associate Editor at Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica (FPL) for seven years and in 2011 was named Editor in Chief of FPL. Dr. Weismer has won several teaching awards, including a mentoring award in the UW-Madison Honors program and several residence hall awards for outstanding teaching. Dr. Weismer is a member of the Executive Board of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP), and is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.
