I have learned a lot

Once upon a time I had been member of research team working on vocabulary within particular field of humanities. Head of the grant was forcing all the researchers to be short and effective in writing. Each of us had to produce a definition of particular term. We were not allowed to use more than 12 words. That was the time for learning - we learned how to speak and write on our topics with no "empty" words.

Larry Smith's book shows something very similar. I love it. I have learned a lot from the book because it shows possibility to be even shorter in your expressions (6 words only) + it shows how you can speak about yourself, about your life shortly and effectively.

The whole skill in both above mentioned cases is to catch the most important point of view. Really THE MOST important. You need to learn how to do it.

Wonderful Study Guide

I've been a fan of Kumon workbooks for the last 5 years. This Algebra workbook provides a thorough practice for my daughter this summer entering the 8th grade. Each page provides tips and an answer guide is provided. She has definitely been challenged by the problems. I recommend this as a great supplemental guide to parents.

excellent algebra workbook

My son didn't do very well in her algebra practice. Then one of my friends introduced this workbook to us. This book includes algebra practice such as solving for X, simplifying algebraic expressions and linear equations. Like other Kumon books, this one also emphasizes a logical progression and plenty of repetition to reinforce important concepts. Concepts are introduced gradually and built upon one another. At first, my son found the sections of advanced level difficult. I asked him to go back to the sections of standard level and do some additional practice and repetition. After he completed the easier sections, he surprisingly found that the advanced level was not so hard. He had progressed though the workbook and mastered earlier concepts that would help with the difficult section. This star system is really good, and Kumon is excellent. I can see my son’s progress since we worked together using this book. His math rank in Beestar’s 6th grade tests has also risen significantly. I highly recommend this workbook.

This is a wonderful book for those students who are taking algebra. I remember my father trying to help me with algebra. This book makes learning algebra as fun as it can be for my tutee. My tutee is good in math and this book should enable him to fly off the charts in beginning algebra, unlike his tutee who was lucky to receive an A after numerous nights of fatherly assistance.

THE SON OF A SERIAL KILLER IS BACK!

For those of you who missed my review of BROKEN DOLLS, the first of the Jefferson Winter series, here is a recap of this terrifically intriguing man. Jefferson Winter is an ex-FBI Agent/Profiler. He is now a free-lance consultant/hunter of serial criminals. Jefferson Winter is the son of a sexual killer who was put to death in prison.

Winter has been contacted about the brutal murder of a man in Eagle Creek, Louisiana. The sheriff has sent him the film clip they received showing the victim tied up and purposely set on fire. However, they have no body, no crime scene, no nothing. It will be up to Winter to piece together a profile based on very little information and with only the help of one rookie cop and his girlfriend, the owner of the local hotel.

When Winter decides their murderer is a cop, the fireworks really begin.

Jefferson Winter is extremely smart and he's a touch arrogant with it. At times he's not really likeable .. and yet, as this book touches on several memories from his childhood with his father, he is very compassionate and very singularly likeable.

This is a terrific series and Jefferson Winter is the perfect series character. I look forward to reading the 3rd one ... PREY.

Absolutely Brilliant !

If you like serial killer novels, then you have to give this author a try. The fact he is not much more well known than he is, at present, is astounding, he is just as good as any of the well known authors in this genre, and better than many. He has created a main character it's hard not to like, and story lines that so far have kept me guessing in his 2 books so far in this series,this being book number 2. I know there are so many new authors out there, all supposedly with the 'next big thing' in crime thrillers, but take it from me, this guy is for real, his novels are ultimately readable, hard to put down, if not damn impossible ! And keep you wanting more, what more could you possibly want ? Oh yes, and they are dirt cheap ! Not sure why, they are worth much more, and I'm sure in the future those that first discovered this amazing new author will be pleased to of found him, way back when ..... The next big thing in crime fiction is here and now !

Great Book

Chuck Feeney is a first cousin, my age (83) and he has had great success in business. His book should be read by people who might like to be successful in business. The fact that he became a billionaire and gave his money away secretly, is very interesting. What he has contributed in education, health, and helping with poverty in third class countries is an example for others with wealth.
He did not want his name on buildings or the publicity that goes with large contributions to worthwhile causes. Cornell is his college and he has given generously. Ireland has received much of his attention. He has helped build hospitals, colleges around the country and the world. A very modest, humble man with a sense of humor. The book is a great read.

What a beautiful person chuck Feeney is.

This is the most inspiring book I have read so far. This book was more motivating and inspirational to me than books such as the `Secret' by Rhonda Byrne. Here's a real `existing' role model we can all look up to. He did it, and so can we. He is a living proof that helping others in unselfish ways is possible. He is living proof that that there is good on Earth, and being good is not only possible but feasible.

This is the story of Chuck Feeney, born into a poor family. Not having enough funds to pay for his college education, Feeney joins the Air Force, and is stationed in Japan. There he realizes the profit making potential of duty-free sales. He starts selling duty-free goods to soldiers, such as tobacco and alcohol, and to make the story short, ends up owning duty-free shops across the world. Within a few years he becomes a billionaire. He is ranked as the 23rd richest man in the United States by Forbes magazine.

Feeney was not happy with his billions. He did not like the life of excess lived by the rich. `How many shoes do you need?' he would often ask. He did not like the competition between the rich in owning luxury goods. For example, a yacht is never big enough; someone else will have a bigger one. Someone else will have a bigger mansion.

Feeney was also worried for his children. Kidnapping was prevalent at the time, and Feeney did not want to live his life surrounded by bodyguards and in fear for his family. So one day, he secretly flies to the Bahamas and donates all his profits to his newly established charity organization.

Many find it hard to part from a few dollars. Feeney parted with billions. All the proceeds from Feeney's company went straight to his charity foundation. Unlike Bill Gates (whom I also admire for his philanthropy), Feeney gave away his whole fortune without announcing it. No one ever knew of Feeney's philanthropy, not even his partners. His name is not on any library, University, or building. Feeney gave secretly. He believed that your left hand should not know what your right hand is doing when it comes to charitable donations. Feeney is a man who gives not for selfish reasons such as recognition and fame, but to help make a change in people's lives.

Feeney did not feel guilty about making money, but he felt guilty keeping it. He felt his money should not be for the sole purpose of giving him and his family pleasure, but for giving pleasure to the world.

Feeney also helped solve the IRA (Irish Republican Army) problem together with Bill Clinton, and opposed the war in Iraq. He did not vote for Bush in 2004, and marched against the war of Iraq in the streets of London in 2004. He also felt that the US was unfair to Vietnam, and flew several times to Vietnam offering anonymous help.

Chuck Feeney is a great man, and his story should be an inspiration to all of us. This book should be read by everyone, and should be required reading in schools and universities. If one man can make such a difference, how much can we all do together? For one thing, we would end world hunger and poverty!

This book made me realize that ending world poverty is not such a farfetched dream: all it takes is a humble heart, like the one Chuck Feeney has!

Money can be the root of all evil. Money does corrupt, and in excess corrupts absolutely. But money can also end all of the world's suffering. It is a two edged sword. One edge will bleed the world to death; the other edge will bring an end to suffering.

Inspiring story

Next time you get a letter from a charity, think of Chuck Feeney who gave >$1 Billion away in his lifetime. And all without fanfare, without his name on buildings and streets. I found it interesting how he selected his gifts (a lot to education), and to the locations (USA of course, Ireland, Vietnam, etc.) And he managed to leverage his money by getting the government to match many of his contributions.

The book is perhaps a bit heavy on details of how he made his money (Duty Free stores), and the various schemes to tax shelter his money, and the steps to remain anonymous. He believed that one should give money directly to causes that would make a difference, and monitor the progress to see that the money was being wisely used. He distrusted Government spending which often has graft and inefficiency, and political conditions.

In short, an inspiring book well worth reading, and acting on if your finances allow.

About the Author
Stephen Marshak is Professor of Geology and Head of the Department of Geology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, an M.S. from the University of Arizona, and a B.A. from Cornell University. He has served as Chair of the Division of Structural Geology and Tectonics of the Geological Society of America. Dr. Marshak has written numerous research articles on topics in structural geology and tectonics, and has authored or co-authored four books: Basic Methods of Structural Geology; Earth Structure, Earth: Portrait of a Planet; and Essentials of Geology.

The best of geology

This book is indeed the best introduction to geology you can ever get. It has the most fundamental knowlegde and at the same time it includes a higher level. So it is for all people with an interest in geology. If you are a student and even if you are a normal person with great interest this book will become your favorite. It combins beautyful pictures with nice drawings and great text. It gives a good picture of what it is like to be a geologist and what the work includes.

Simply: you get the best of geology!! Injoy:o)

New Revised Edition Is Even Better

The sub-title 'Portrait of a Planet' gives you some idea of what this book is all about. It is almost a coffee table picture book, filled with photographs of the earth. Yet at the same time its first edition became the text book of choice at over 300 colleges and universities around the world.

This is the brand new second edition. The new edition has taken comments about the previous edition, integrated them with the results of recent discoveries and more examples, photographs, art work, and text to make the second edition even better. Each chapter of the first edition was sent to an expert reviewer (a world leader on that particular subject) for comment.

The biggest change in the new edition is to stress plate tectonics earlier and stronger to provide the underlying theory that covers most of current geologic thinking.

I also like his explanation of the oil situation. He looks at alternatives and points out that we may well be living in a unique time of history.

Excellent!

This books serves as an excellent introduction to geology and earth sciences. It is extremely well written and explains difficult concepts well. Because it is written as a college textbook the examples and analogies given are drawn from common experience that are easy to understand.
Among the best part of the book are the illustrations which are beautiful to look at and supplement the text expertly, again reinforcing concepts.
I appreciated the way the author has integrated the broad theory of plate tectonics throughout all sections of the book. In particular he has expertly woven the theory of plate tectonics into the history of the earth's evolution and how that in turn has led to the evolution of life.
This book is a great introduction for college students and for the educated layman looking to better appreciate and understand this wonderful place we call earth.
